Everyone, it seems, is on Facebook. People are connecting with friends, classmates, and family that they havent seen in years or a few days. Facebook was founded by a college student named Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, when him and his friends were trying to find a way to hook up with girls. When Facebook first started it was for primarily for college students, now it has exploded into the most popular social networking site in the world. Facebook is now a huge part of marketing. Most businesses advertise and promote via Facebook.

Facebook Tips: A Facebook Guide

I personally am not a huge fan of Facebook. I really began using Facebook because of school and my major. I just don’t get Facebook. I only really go on there because of friends, classmates, and family. I must admit that it has connected me with people that I haven’t seen or heard from in years. I don’t fan celebrities or businesses on Facebook because I’m from the old school of Facebook and have reserved that site for friends, family, and classmates. Facebook seems to intrigue people like no other social networking sites. It pulled off what Myspace was trying to do. But all in all I still use Facebook like I use Myspace, to look at others pictures. Yeah it’s called nosey!

Twitter? March 24, 2010

Most people are confused about Twitter is and how it works. I explain Twitter as a micro-blogging social networking site. Twitter is all status updates all the time in a 140 characters. Twitter has been around since 2006. In the last four years Twitter has expanded tremendously. Twitter is used world-wide and more people are getting into. Twitter has also developed its own language known as ‘Twerminology.”

I have a Twitter account and I “tweet” quite often. What I enjoy about Twitter is the fact that it is so simple and in a sense quite private. What I mean by private is that no one knows when you log on or off and they can’t see when you’re visiting their page/timeline. I absolutely love that Twitter topics are so random! Twitter is where I get the news, current events, and all the juicy gossip! I can no longer watch my favorite shows without being on Twitter. It’s like watching TV with a million friends! On Twitter you choose who you want to follow, and if you make your timeline private it’s your choice who sees what you have to say.

I highly recommend a Twitter count, follow tons of people, and start tweeting. The more you tweet, the more followers you get!

What is Web 2.0? No, really what is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 has many definitions. The easiest way I find to explain Web 2.0 is as any online media that has a two-way communication. So, web applications that facilitate interactive information sharing, such as networking sites like Twitter, fall into this category. Web 2.0 is a more interactive web. The term Web 2.0 was first coined by Tim O’Reilly at the O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.

Honestly, I don’t fully comprehend what Web 2.0 is. All I know is that we are now using a more interactive World Wide Web. Now everyone can be apart of the information given on the web. This works because people, including myself, want to a part of something. We can only expect for web to evolve into something better. I hope this helped.

WTF is Social Media? March 22, 2010

WTF is Social Media? This seems to be the question that everyone is asking. Let’s see if I can answer it in the simplest form. The best way I can describe, and how I understand Social Media is like this: Social Media is any media that allows for a two-way communication (Web 2.0). It is any communication via the web that interacts with you, while providing information. This interaction can be as simple as leaving a comment. It was only a few years ago that if you had an opinion on a company or news segment, you had to call in or send a letter and wait weeks for a response. Now you can go to the website, send a text, twitter, Facebook, or simply blog about how you feel.

Social Media has revolutionized the internet and the market place all at once. Now a company can find out exactly what their consumers like and expect from them. More importantly they are discovering ways to better improve their services. Social Media has become a new “tool” in marketing, PR, advertising, and sales. Through Social Media a company can reach all their consumers and potential consumers around the world for almost nothing. This in-turn has opened up new markets that were unattainable before.

As for the average Joe, that doesn’t own a company, Social Media is still a great way to communicate with friends, family, neighbors, even long-lost cousins. More and More people are making real connections with people from all over the world. I know that on Facebook alone I’ve reconnected with so many family members who I haven’t seen in years. Social Networks are the best for “being in the know,” with those you care about most. And the best part is that these networks are free and it can be done on the go through your mobile phone. This is what has my Mom of 58, who doesn’t even text, saying that she needs a phone with web capabilities. She doesn’t fully understand it all but she does understand the potential.

Who the heck is Vanesa Hernandez? March 21, 2010

Hey Everyone!!

I first would like to thank you for taking the time to read my blog. Let me give you some background on myself: I’m 27 and currently a Senior at City College (CCNY). My major is Advertising and Public Relations. I am absolutely fascinated with Social Media and that’s where this story really begins. This semester I’m taking a course on social media (was super excited when they finally had one) and our midterm assignment is a blog. I have never done a blog before and hardly follow any. So this is a brand new experience for me. I’m kind of excited and a bit nervous because I want to have good and interesting content.

I decided to focus my blog on Social Media, of course, and some PR. This blog will be about what I’m learning in Social Media. I found that most people don’t even know what Social Media is and how its works. Even when you Google it you get a million different definitions. And as for how it works, that’s the tricky and very interesting part! No one really knows how it works and yet the capabilities of Social Media are endless! So WE (and I do mean WE because I’m also learning) can expect to learn a thing or two on Social Media, I won’t keep any info from you guys. Feel free to contact me, I am Human! Let’s not waste any time, since the internet moves so fast, let’s get this party started!

Hello world!
